1. Agreement and operator
Parallelo is operated by Luke Parsons in Barcelona, Spain ("Parallelo", "we", "us", or "our"). By accessing or using Parallelo, you agree to these Terms of Service and the Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use the service.
You must be at least 13 to use Parallelo. If you are under 18—or below the age at which you can enter this agreement where you live—you may use Parallelo only with permission from a parent or legal guardian, who is responsible for your use.
2. Your account
You must provide accurate sign-in information, keep access to your Google or Apple account secure, and promptly tell us if you believe your Parallelo account has been compromised. You are responsible for activity under your account. You may not share reviewer, test, or other access credentials or use another person's account without permission.
3. What Parallelo provides
Parallelo helps you read and listen to ebooks and audiobooks, including by parsing files, synchronizing reading position, translating text, generating glosses and definitions, producing speech or audiobooks, transcribing audio, and aligning text with narration. Features may differ by device, language, file format, region, or account and may change over time.
4. Your content and permissions
You retain any rights you have in the files, text, images, audio, metadata, and other material you submit ("Your Content"). Parallelo does not gain ownership of Your Content.
Parallelo may de-duplicate identical files and reuse cached translations, speech, transcripts, alignments, or similar derived processing when another user submits identical content. This does not permit us to make your private library or uploaded source files publicly browseable. Shared caches may outlast your account or individual upload, as explained in the Privacy Policy.
You represent that you have all rights and permissions needed to upload and process Your Content and that doing so does not violate copyright, privacy, confidentiality, publicity, contractual, or other rights. Parallelo is a personal reading tool, not a license to copy or distribute books or recordings unlawfully.
5. Acceptable use
You may not use Parallelo to:
- break the law or infringe another person's rights;
- upload malware, abusive material, or content you have no right to process;
- harass, exploit, or endanger another person;
- bypass access, rate, usage, or security controls;
- probe, disrupt, overload, scrape, reverse engineer, or interfere with the service except where applicable law expressly permits it;
- resell or provide access to Parallelo as a competing service without written permission; or
- use automated means in a way that imposes unreasonable load or provider cost.
We may remove content, limit processing, or suspend access where we reasonably believe it is necessary to protect the service, users, third parties, or comply with law.
6. Parallelo materials
Parallelo's software, design, branding, and service materials are owned by us or our licensors and are protected by intellectual-property laws. Except for rights expressly granted by these terms or an applicable open-source license, no rights are transferred to you. Feedback you choose to provide may be used without restriction or payment, but we are not required to use it.
7. Third-party services and app stores
Parallelo relies on third parties for sign-in, hosting, storage, analytics, translation, transcription, speech, and other processing. Their services may be governed by their own terms and may become unavailable. We are not responsible for third-party services outside our control.
If you download Parallelo through Apple or Google, the applicable store terms also apply. Apple and Google are not responsible for providing or supporting Parallelo except as their store rules require.
8. Availability and changes
We aim to keep Parallelo useful and reliable, but the service is provided on an evolving basis. We may add, change, limit, suspend, or discontinue features, supported formats, models, providers, storage limits, or the service itself. We will try to give reasonable notice before a material discontinuation when practical, but emergency, legal, security, or provider changes may happen without advance notice.
Keep independent copies of important files. Parallelo is not a backup service, and you should not rely on it as the only copy of a book, audiobook, translation, annotation, or generated output.
9. Fees
Parallelo may offer free or paid features. If a paid feature is introduced, its price, billing period, renewal terms, taxes, and cancellation options will be shown before purchase, and any additional purchase terms will form part of this agreement. App-store purchases are also subject to the store's billing and refund rules.
10. Ending use and account termination
You may stop using Parallelo at any time and may delete your account through the in-app Delete account action. The consequences and limits of deletion—including shared caches, logs, and backups—are described in the Privacy Policy.
We may suspend or terminate access if you materially or repeatedly breach these terms, create risk or legal exposure, fail to pay an applicable fee, or if we discontinue the service. Where reasonable, we will give notice and an opportunity to correct the issue. Sections that by their nature should survive termination—including content permissions already needed for shared caches, intellectual property, disclaimers, liability limits, and dispute terms—will survive.
11. Disclaimers
To the maximum extent permitted by law, Parallelo is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of uninterrupted availability, error-free operation, fitness for a particular purpose, merchantability, non-infringement, or that generated output will be accurate or preserve the exact meaning, formatting, timing, or quality of source material.
Nothing in these terms excludes rights or warranties that cannot lawfully be excluded, including mandatory consumer protections.
12. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, Parallelo and its operator will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive loss, or for lost profits, revenue, data, content, goodwill, or business opportunity arising from use of the service.
For claims where liability may lawfully be limited, our total liability arising from Parallelo during the 12 months before the event giving rise to the claim will not exceed the greater of (a) the amount you paid Parallelo during that period or (b) €50. This limit does not apply to fraud, willful misconduct, death or personal injury caused by negligence, breach of mandatory data-protection obligations, or any liability that cannot lawfully be limited.
13. Governing law and disputes
These terms are governed by the laws of Spain, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. If you are a consumer, you also keep any mandatory protections and right to bring a claim in the courts provided by the law of your country of residence. Otherwise, courts in Barcelona, Spain will have exclusive jurisdiction.
Before filing a formal claim, please email parallelo@luke.ac so we can try to resolve the issue informally.
14. General terms
If a provision is unenforceable, it will be limited or removed only to the extent necessary and the rest will remain in effect. Our failure to enforce a term is not a waiver. You may not transfer this agreement without our consent; we may transfer it as part of a reorganization, financing, acquisition, or sale of the service. These terms and any purchase-specific terms are the entire agreement about Parallelo and replace earlier agreements on the same subject.
15. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms to reflect changes to Parallelo, providers, law, or risk. We will post revised terms here with a new effective date. For material changes, we will provide additional notice when reasonably possible. Continuing to use Parallelo after revised terms take effect means you accept them; if you do not agree, stop using the service and delete your account.
16. Contact
